As a young child I remember we had two black phones in our house. One was referred to as “the house phone” and the other was called “the extension”. They looked identical to me and also resembled all our neighbor’s phones. By the time I discovered the reason for the different designations we moved to a house with four phones, all different colors, three with dials and one with buttons.
